What does a highly respected, well-run healthcare organization do when their Gallup data indicate employee engagement below 50%? When mergers and acquisitions led to growth, but a fractured sense of common purpose? When people feel like they’re miles apart and literally are, despite saving lives, serving families, and healing people?
They connect.
But how, without a spare moment in the work day lives of healthcare employees? We began with Purpose Graffiti Walls in a hundred locations, then created content that connected people to purpose and to each other. Stories, videos, podcasts and more were shared on an internal social network. That’s where something quite magical happened: People started affirming one another, encouraging each other, and sharing positive thoughts.
Four pieces of content follow that demonstrate how we are transforming C-Suite digital leadership while making purpose the core of employee engagement and culture. The Soul of…series captures the backstory of an employee, connecting it to their reason for working in healthcare. These short, honest stories consistently inspire others and create a more connected community. See for yourself in the comments below…

This organization’s new CEO wanted to create a common culture, common purpose, and common identity. Meanwhile, Gallup data pointed to three key drivers for engagement: Mission/Purpose, Open Communication, and My Opinions Count. (Recognition in the Last 7 Days wasn’t far behind.) The data informed our creative approach and all the content, including a Day in the Life video series that captured employees living the purpose and a five-part employee opinion series called Thinking Out Loud.

The Purpose Podcast shared patient stories—told by the chief health officers of families—that demonstrated the amazing work done by staff every day. Whether listened to on break or during one’s commute, the podcasts were reminders of the impact they had on families in the community and how everyone contributes to a greater good.
